Ran Lower Rustic this last weekend (Grandpa's Gorge, Hole 99 etc.). It felt like a definate step up from Lower Mish. Maybe tougher III or intro to IV? What is the consensus on where this run fits in?

Eddyflower has it down as a IV-, that's where I'll add it.

Matt,
I wasn't speaking about Upper Mish; since I've never run that section. I was discussing Lower Mish.

Thanks,
Dawn

Matt,
Unless you get a consensus from the group...I wouldn't just update the list to match what Eddyflower states. We have that as a resource already and it would be good to get individual opinions on the differences since Eddyflower pulls from other 'text book' sources.

It would be nice to hear our fellow kayakers take on a run. I like the idea of saying a run is easy III at this level but harder III at this level.

Thanks, ~dawn

This is a living document as such it is easy to change, if someone has an issue where things end up I hope they feel free to comment and create a discussion on a topic that will hopefully create that consensus.

As to different ratings for different levels or conditions, if I recieve that type of input I will be glad to include it. I understand that the point of this list is getting local opinions by boaters that are roughly at the same skill level. However, I don't think we should exclude eddyflower as being one reference or from being a benchmark simply because it is already there.

Just like any other reference material it is only as good as the input that is provided by the experts (god help us that is us I think).

It's all relative really you can rate a river a III one day go back two days later and it maybe reaching a IV-. That's what makes it all so new every time you run a river it changes. Maybe a hole where there was none or a big lateral that formed after the river went up only 50cfs! Also you must take into account who is giving you the report a newbie who ran it for the first time or someone who has run it 20 times perspective changes with ability! Just my .02 and that's' probably what it's worth!

On the east coast, many of the rivers are dam release so they flow the exact same level every time. Without all the variables, it would make it easier to learn to kayak out there, I think.

Yeah, but then you would have to live on the east coast...

Hey there, I'm looking for some more little runs in the denver metro area. Some one metioned Clear Creek from the first tunnel down not being to bad, generally a solid III depending on the water. Does anyone have some beta on that little leg?

There is some small rock (blast rock) dodging by the put in at low water. Higher water there are few eddies available. It's a pretty fun III, but short.

There is a hanging tree strainer on river right that comes into play at high water. Dodging it is easy but swimming into it would be bad.

Nice, where do you think it would fit into our little stepping stone list? Solid III or Hard III?

Would you be down for hitting towards the end of next week?

LLCC: I think I'd call it just plain III or maybe solid III at higher water, but it's all backwards...you hit the ground running at the putin with no warm up, then after the rapids a mile of Class II before town. It's hardly worth it IMHO and a shitty place to swim for many reasons (cliffed out on one side in areas, a few minor undercuts, that strainer, sharp rocks). Not to mention the Poisen Ivy at the putin. The plus side is that someone is likely to rescue your gear as it floats through Golden.

If you are headed to Golden anyway, then yeah, go for it. Otherwise, it's probably not worth it.

Yeah. What Dan wrote...
Class III only. It's a good intro to bigger stuff, especially if you are meeting folks in the Golden PP after work and they want a little more.

Don't forget to mention that Lower Blue has a Class V put-in!

You could add fort collins town run to the beginners runs. Has one class 3 boat ramp that is easy portage.
